Carmen E. Kreis

In the solo exhibition “Litzi” (Shadow Side), the Basel artist Carmen E. Kreis (*1964) shows new works that were created this year during a studio stay at the Versam art collective in the Safien valley. The focus is on two video works, which will be shown together with new photographic works.

The outdoor installation on the window and the two videos inside deal with the elementary use of wood in the Safien valley. The starting point for implementation in all three works is the concrete craft, the cultural technique. However, installation, image composition and editing in the videos go beyond documentation. They create an additional level of experience that – supported by the sound – can put the viewer in a meditative mood.

The photographic works show seemingly banal things. They make rural everyday life visible, sometimes obscured by the choice of detail, sometimes obvious, surprising - and in any case opening up an inspiring perspective.
